Sony Outs Universal Remote Control With E-Paper Touchscreen But You Can't Buy It Yet

Sony has released a universal remote control called Huis Remote Controller, but its availability is still limited.

Modern day households normally have a number of electronics that can be controlled with a remote control. Owners may sometimes find it difficult to find the correct remote controller for the right electronic they want to use. The Huis Remote Controller comes to the rescue for those who do not want the hassles of multiple remotes.

Sony launched the Huis Remote Controller through its crowdfunding platform First Flight in mid-2015. The remote control also was demonstrated at the 2016 CES specially touting an e-paper touchscreen that allows users to customize the button they want.

Sony suggests that it decided to opt for an e-paper screen instead of an LCD screen because the former consumes less power and it's more natural to use. According to the company, the Huis Remote Controller has a 1,500 mAh battery and a single charge will keep it going for about a month.

With the Huis, users can control a wide array of electronics such as TVs, Blu-ray players, air conditioners, lights and fans. Owners of the novel remote control can customize the interface directly on the remote or with the help of a PC app. Customers also have the option to download and share configurations online.

The remote itself has just one physical button. When the button is clicked, it vibrates and takes the user to a main menu that details the number of devices it is configured to control.

The design compliments the functions of the remote controller. It has gentle curves at the corners and fits easily in the hands. At 130 grams or 4.58 ounces, the Sony universal remote controller is lightweight. It measures 123 mm x 68 mm x 24 mm.

The Huis Remote Controller may sound very interesting, but customers who want to purchase it will have to spend ¥27,950, or about $250. Customers in Japan can order it online. However, buyers outside Japan will be left disappointed as it will not make its way to other regions yet. It remains to be seen if Sony officially launches the handy gadget in other parts of the world, so it could compete with other brands such as the Neeo universal remote.
