Someone Trolled The University Of Michigan By Spamming Its Students With 'Hotline Bling' Lyrics

As if Matt Bomer dancing to "Hotline Bling" in the last season of American Horror Story wasn't enough, it looks like someone spammed a good chunk of the student population at the University of Michigan by sending over 30 emails containing the lyrics for Drake's 2015 hit single.

According to the student paper the Michigan Daily, emails sent by a Gmail account known as "hotlineblingblingboi@gmail.com" began appearing in the mailboxes of students the evening of Feb. 10 — ones that, as the paper pointed out, were sent to individual students and not the university's listerv.

UMich students took to Twitter to report the Drake-themed spam floating around campus. One reported having received 30 emails, each of which contained fragmented lyrics, and another observed that the emails each contained only five to 10 words per message.

In an attempt to collect data on exactly how much of the UMich population received the emails, the university's paper posted a poll on its Twitter account, hoping to tally up the actual number of students who received lyrics about "glasses of champagne out on the dance floor" and "hangin' with some girls [they've] never seen before" (as of now, the poll has 382 votes, with seven hours until the survey closes for final results).

The Daily also cited the university's policy on spamming of this nature, which prohibits students from assuming an alias and/or concealing their identity while sending messages online.

"You may not communicate or act under the guise, name, identification, email address, signature, or indicia of another person without proper authorization, nor may you communicate under the rubric of an organization, entity, or unit that you do not have the authority to represent," the UMich Standard Practice Guide states.

As of now, there is no word on who the mysterious spammer might be, though there is one clue: a drop-down box containing the original recipients of the series of emails lists the source as "Michael's MacBook Pro."
