Last week, we reported that NASA had released a 360-degree video of gorgeous Martian sand dunes. Today, it made the video available on YouTube as well, collecting almost equally-impressive (and impressively-daft) comments.
YouTube has been making 360-degree videos available for over a year, but NASA first released its video on social media platform Facebook last week, where it was celebrated by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The release to YouTube comes on the heels of an announcement that YouTube is working on making 360-degree videos available in a livestreaming format. Maybe you can join your next furry conference from the safety and privacy of your own couch! Until then, Mars will have to do.
To enjoy the video, click around with your mouse and take in a 360-degree view, as if you are the rover itself. All around you are sand dunes, and above, an eerily cloudy sky. The images are remarkably clear, having been captured on the Mars Hand Lens Imager, which Curiosity holds in one of its robotic arms. Curiosity landed on Mars in 2012. It is one of two active rovers on Mars. The other is Opportunity.
Maybe NASA will synchronize its efforts and release NASA 360 in 360.
