To lure more gamers to buy the Xbox, Microsoft has made Red Dead Redemption backward compatible. While the procedure for downloading and installing the game for those who didn't buy it has spread online, Microsoft warns obtaining it by means of the workaround may infringe the Code of Conduct of Xbox One.
The game was initially leaked on NeoGAF, alongside Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
It looks like Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption is available to those who own it digitally. It necessitates some navigation to download it, though.
If, however, you don't have a digital copy of the game, you can grab it from the Xbox store for $30.
Use this step-by-step guide to get this game for your Xbox One.
1. Head over to Find a Friend option under the Friends menu.
2. Look for "RockoHoward."
3. Upon locating the user, check out his profile.
4. Go to the user's following list.
5. Instead of "Friends & games," sort by "Games."
6. Look for Red Dead Redemption.
7. Tap "See in store."
8. An "Install" prompt finally shows up.
However, IGN has pushed out updates on the story saying that while several publications have already reported on the process of downloading the game, it looks like installing it goes against the Xbox Live Code of Conduct.
"Don't pirate or use another's content without permission," reads a part of the Code of Conduct.
It likewise stipulates that anyone should not "play a game before it has been authorized for play on the service."
In the meantime, Microsoft's Xbox Support Twitter account also cautions not to use the above-mentioned procedure as it may violate the Code of Conduct.
On the Xbox Feedback site, the game sits on the number three spot as being the most sought after game for the Xbox One's backward compatibility program, next to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. These two games, however, have yet to be included in the program. Red Dead Redemption has sold more than 14 million copies.
To date, Xbox One users are now able to enjoy at least 131 games in the backward compatibility program. The list of Xbox One backward compatible games can be found here.
At any rate, introducing the backward compatibility program, which enables users to play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, could give gamers a good reason to choose Microsoft's gaming console over Sony's PlayStation 4.
