Great timing — with Super Bowl 50 just two days away, Wilson Sporting Goods has introduced a prototype of what it's calling the Wilson X smart football, which has embedded motion sensors that track velocity, spin, distance and even if the ball wobbles, with the help of an accompanying smartphone app.
Wilson execs actually flew to San Francisco, host of Sunday's Super Bowl, to demonstrate the Wilson X smart football, which will reportedly be available before the 2016 NFL season this fall, according to SFGate.com.
The introduction of a smart football comes after Wilson has already come out with its Wilson X Connected smart basketball, of which Tech Times did a hands-on review.
"That's where we're going with connected products and this is just the tip of the iceberg," Bob Thurman, vice president of innovation for Wilson, told SFGate.com. "We hope at some point it's just going to be part of every ball that we make."
He added: "This is actually a game console."
Like its connected basketball, Wilson's smart football contains low-power Bluetooth capabilities, which are used to sync with the company's smartphone app. Together, they're able to track and pinpoint several areas of your game, with the speed of your throws and distance perhaps being the most useful statistics to make you a better quarterback.
Although the smart basketball retails for $200, Wilson hasn't set a price for its connected football just yet. The football's battery is designed to last two years, though, so users will get plenty of practice.
