As Motorola prepares to launch its Moto 360 smart watch at an event in Chicago, flashes of a "G" and an "X" on a teaser site hint that two new smartphones may be in the company's playbook.
The teaser site, NewfromMoto, briefly flashes two phone icons, which hints that Motorola will at least announce details about it's Moto G and X series of phones sometime around the unveiling of its smart watch. A smart watch icon also appears in a flash on the website, likely referring the Moto 360, and a Bluetooth headset appears briefly before the site invites visitors to find out more on Sept. 4.
Motorola officially announced the Moto 360 back in March, stating that the smart watch would be available sometime during the summer of 2014.
"The wristwatch has been through several evolutions since it first became a popular fashion accessory more than a 100 years ago," stated Motorola. "From mechanical to electronic movements, analog to digital faces, the wristwatch has been reinvented several times over, but the basic design has endured for a century because of its elegance and usefulness 'at a glance.' Our vision for Moto 360 was to celebrate that history as we reimagined the wristwatch for the future."
During Google I/O 2014, it was announced that the smart watch still wasn't quite ready for release. Now, Motorola has set in stone a release date for the Moto 360, slated for Sept. 4 at an event in Chicago.
The Sept. 4 unveil will grant the smart watch a chance to wow consumers before Apple's big day just a few days later. While Apple has been expected to reveal the iPhone 6 on its Sept. 9 media day, there have been indications that the company could also release news about its unannounced iWatch.
While Motorola's a short-timer with Google as Lenovo is preparing to take over, the Moto 360 will likely serve as the best representation of Google's take on smart watches and its Android Wear platform.
LG and Samsung have released their Android-based smart watches, but Google has had much more of a say in the designs of the Moto 360 -- the Moto 360's round face is one of the most noticeable differences between it and the squared offering from LG and Samsung. If the iWatch is indeed announced on Sept. 9, that will put just days between Google and Apple's smart watch offerings and finally open up founded debate from brand loyalists.
