Sony PlayStation TV set for October launch in North America

Sony revealed that buyers of the console will get a trio of free digital games but didn't really confirm what those games would be. It's also unclear if the deal applies to both game players in North America and in Europe.

PlayStation TV is formerly known as Vita TV which was launched in Japan in 2013. It features a wide range of PlayStation Vita games and even digital games from PlayStation 1 and from PlayStation Portable games. With the feature called "Remote Play," a user can stream PlayStation 4 games coming from a PS4 console in his home into a separate TV where the PlayStation TV is connected. Users can also access some available entertainment material through the device's PlayStation Network. Moreover, the device will receive support coming from the PlayStation Now streaming service.

The sleek and compact PlayStation TV console features a universe of PlayStation games that are ready for streaming, downloading, and playing. It can be used as a primary gaming system or as a secondary console. Its compact size makes it easy to be used in any room of the house. Most of all, it's perfect for gamers of all ages and various skill levels. When playing games with controllers, game players can use the Dualshock 3 and Dualshock 4 controllers.

Apart from all these features, Sony is adding PlayStation Now which will be available on select devices in the latter part of the year. The feature will enable gamers to gain access to PS3's expanding library of games and stream them directly to the PlayStation TV gaming system. It may require additional purchases and registration. The service is available only in certain areas as well. To fully enjoy this feature, it is highly recommended that the user has a steady broadband connection with a minimum speed of at least 5 Mbps.

The PlayStation TV is also loaded with various entertainment apps such as Music Unlimited and PlayStation Store. Through these, users can get hold of movie titles, TV shows, and music by downloading, renting, or streaming.

For the spec geeks, the PlayStation TV has the dimension of 65.0 x 105.0 x 13.6mm and weighs approximately 110g. It features ARM Cortex A9 core, IMG SGX543MP4 as the GPU, 1GB internal memory, AV output (720p, 1080i, 480p), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LPCM 2ch sound output, and about 2.8W of maximum rated power consumption.

The PlayStation TV is selling at $100 in North America and at €99 in Europe. It will also be available as a bundle which will include a DualShock 3, a memory card of 8GB, a USB cable, and an original copy of the new "Lego The Movie Videogame" on PS Vita. The bundle pack will retail at $140.
