The Opera browser for computers just got a neat new update that brings an improved download interface, as well as an option to mute tabs.
Opera may not be as popular as other rival browsers such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, but it definitely has its strengths. One of those strong suits is that it's constantly improving, adding new ways to enhance the browsing experience.
Back in November, for instance, Opera for Android got a new video compression tool to save data by shrinking the size of online videos. At the same time, Opera Mini received a new tabbed experience.
Not long after, Opera announced that its Opera Max halved data consumption for music services such as YouTube Music, Pandora and others.
The latest update doesn't entail any other data compression tricks, but it nonetheless adds some much-needed improvements.
First of all, the new Opera version 35 now allows users to easily mute tabs. For those who usually open a lot of tabs, this could be a godsend. Instead of hunting for a random tab that automatically starts playing a video, this new option to mute tabs should make it far less frustrating.
In case you want to have sound on one browser tab and mute all others, Opera has a cool trick: you can easily do just that from the pop-up menu when you right-click on a tab.
"This is especially helpful in some cases when you are, for example, listening to music on YouTube while browsing sites with auto-play sounds and videos that interfere with your music," Opera explains.
The new download interface, meanwhile, gets significantly better with the last update because it now offers quick links to documents, images, video, archives, music or other common file types such as PDF. Once the download is complete, Opera will also display a notification to let you know. Overall, the refreshed interface looks cleaner and notably more useful, offering a better view of downloaded files.
Lastly, Opera also added customization options with a new basic section, allowing users to customize their options for downloads, startup, bookmarks or cookies. Changing themes straight from settings is now possible as well.
