There were rumors that Samsung was planning to launch several Galaxy S7 variants at its press event next month. A new report claims the Galaxy S7 edge+ will not make the cut and only the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge will be unveiled.
Mobile World Congress 2016 is less than a month away and kicks off on Feb. 22 in Barcelona. The trade show has become the launch pad for several high-profile smartphones over the last few years, and this year two of the biggest players are holding press events on the same day to unveil their latest flagship smartphones.
LG is expected to launch a first-of-its-kind modular smartphone on Feb. 21 that will reportedly feature a "drawer method" that will allow users to slide out the bottom of the handset to gain access to its removable battery.
A third-party case maker recently leaked images of the G5, which shows off some of the handset's new features, including a dual-lens rear camera and fingerprint scanner below it.
Samsung has also scheduled a press event on Feb. 21 and reports have claimed the smartphone maker was planning to unveil a staggering four new smartphones: the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, S7 Plus and S7 edge+. Now, a new report from a reliable source claims the company will only take the wraps off of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.
According to Evan Blass (@evleaks), who has a solid track record of reporting unannounced devices posted on Twitter, "And then there were two. Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S7 edge."
While he made no mention of the Galaxy S7 Plus or S7 edge+, the message is implied and isn't far-fetched for an obvious reason.
Samsung used last year's Mobile World Congress to unveil the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge and held an event in August to launch the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. The company is well known for releasing several variants of its latest flagship devices, but spaces them out over the year in order to not cannibalize sales. Four new flagship smartphones announced in one day could easily confuse customers and hurt sales.
The likely scenario will be that Samsung will follow the same playbook as last year and hold another event to launch the Galaxy S7 edge+, Note 6 and possibly an S7 Plus this summer.
As always, it's best to take these reports with a huge grain of salt. We'll keep you updated on any new developments and will be covering the show and report back to you.
