On Thursday, BitTorrent released the Sync 2.3 app, bringing some new features for Pro and free users.
BitTorrent aims to provide efficient and direct movement of large data between devices without having to depend on a cloud service. BitTorrent introduced Sync in April 2013 and the app was out of beta in March 2015.
With Sync 2.3, users will be able to run the app as a service on Windows system, allowing the app to run in the background automatically, whether or not the user logged in to the system. The feature can be beneficial for server use. Meanwhile, the SyncPro, starting at $39.99, includes new functionality not present in the free version.
The updated version of Sync allows data movement directly from SD cards on Android devices; however, the Android-powered device should run on Android Lollipop or above. The feature will be helpful to users who want to access additional storage on their mobile devices while backing up their files.
Sync 2.3 also brings the Encrypted Folder option. BitTorrent explains that it understands how concerning it can be for businesses and individuals to store data on third-party hardware. The latest Sync Encrypted Folder option gives users the ability to encrypt data at designated location.
"The Encrypted Folder extends the functionality of the existing standard folder by giving you the ability to have peers that hold data encrypted at rest. An encrypted peer can communicate with both read-only and read-write peers by sending and receiving data from them," says Sync.
BitTorrent also brings a redesigned Add Folder to Sync 2.3, which will offer more information about folder types to users. With Sync 2.3, users will be able to alter a folder path in case the data has been moved. The software update also brings some bug fixes and performance enhancements.
The above updates are available to the free version of Sync.
Sync Pro for Linux has received selective sync, which was already available on Sync for Mac and Windows. The feature lets users download only the files a user needs without replicating entire folders.
BitTorrent also took the opportunity to remind users that it is still working on a Sync-based file replication product, which would be very helpful in IT departments. The product was expected to make its way to the market in 2015.
Existing Sync users have started getting the software update. New customers can buy Sync 2.3 by visiting the app's webpage.
