The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of the United States announced that Britax is recalling infant car seats and strollers because of safety concerns.
Infant Car Seats
The car seats in question are the Britax B-Safe 35 and B-Safe 35 Elite, which were produced from Oct. 1, 2014, to July 1, 2015. Approximately 71,000 units were sold in the United States, 3,900 in Canada and 990 in Mexico.
"The car seat carry handle can crack and break allowing the seat to fall unexpectedly, posing a risk of injury to the infant," CPSC says.
The model numbers of the B-Safe 35, B-Safe 35 Elite and B-Safe 35 Travel System can be viewed at the CPSC website.
Nearly 74 reports of the handles breaking, cracking or fracturing during use were forwarded to Britax. Particularly speaking, one report said that the carrier handle broke, dropped to the ground and caused an infant to bump their head.
The CPSC cautions product owners to using the handle to carry the car seat, but it notes that it's safe to use in a stroller or vehicle.
Strollers And Top Seats
The product that poses a choking hazard is the Britax B-Ready strollers and top seats, which were produced from April 1, 2010, to Dec. 31, 2012. Roughly 49,000 were sold in the United States and 11,000 in Canada.
"The foam padding on the stroller's arm bar can come off in fragments if the child bites the arm bar, posing a choking hazard," the safety commission says.
The model numbers of the B-Ready Strollers and B-Ready replacement top seats are available at the CPSC website.
About 117 reports of children biting the foam on the arm bar were sent to Britax, where five of them indicated that the kids choked on pieces of the material.
The commission urges consumers to temporarily take the arm bar off the stroller (the product can still be used without it) and to contact Britax for a free black zippered arm bar cover and a warning label.
More to the point, the CPSC advises owners of the products to check whether or not the models they have are included in the recall. (Refer to the images above to locate the model numbers.)
Consumers can go ahead and register their affected products on the Britax website, where they'll get a free repair kit.
