3D printing is a major tech trend of late, as is the watch. However, what happens when you combine the two?
That's exactly what Cristoph Laimer did — created a working mechanical watch that anyone with a 3D printer can make.
Of course, it's important to note that the watch isn't very accurate, is very bulky and can only run for around 30 minutes. Despite this, the watch is a big step toward making watches more affordable.
Every single part of the watch is made from 3D-printed plastic, except for a few metal pins that hold the ensemble together. Even the spring, which is flexible, was 3D-printed, part of the reason why the watch isn't very accurate. Because there are 3D printers that can print metal, however, there's no reason the watch can't become a lot more accurate.
Laimer is offering anyone the source files for the watch at the Autodesk 3D printing hub, so if you're interested in making the watch for yourself, you can head over there and download the files. In fact, it's a pretty fascinating project to have a look at, even if you don't have a 3D printer or intend to print the watch yourself.
