Given the success and critical acclaim of Mad Max: Fury Road, it would seem safe to assume that audiences would be seeing more Mad Max in the years to come.
That might not be the case, or if more Mad Max films are made, they won't be coming from franchise creator George Miller. Despite talking with Warner Bros. about further sequels and having written two scripts for future films in the franchise (and just the other week discussing the idea of an Imperator Furiosa film), Miller says in a new interview that he won't be the one to direct new Mad Max films.
"I won't make more ‘Mad Max' movies," Miller says to Page Six. "'Fury Road' with Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Riley Keough was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it's considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again.
"I've shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the U.S. was 27 hours. Those ‘Mad Maxes' take forever. I won't do those anymore."
He's definitely not wrong. It took Miller nearly two decades to complete Fury Road, with the film long trapped in development hell. The film's largely practical effects also aren't easy to create. That being said, Miller told IGN recently that he isn't opposed to other directors taking the franchise forward, depending on who is at the helm.
"It would be wonderful if it was someone like Guillermo [del Toro] or someone like that it would be fantastic," Miller told the site.
It appears the future of the franchise is up in the air at the moment. Given how long it took for Fury Road to see the light of day, fans of Mad Max might not want to expect a return to the wasteland anytime soon.
