The gaming industry went through some growing pains in 2015. While few would claim that it was a bad year for single-player games (Rise of the Tomb Raider and Bloodborne were fantastic), there was a definite rise in multiplayer-only games.
Both Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege and EA's Star Wars: Battlefront ditched the traditional single-player story modes for a focus on multiplayer ... and it didn't necessarily go over well with gamers.
Both games were immediately criticized for a lack of content: at $60 apiece, games aren't cheap, and players want something that's going to keep them engaged even when they're not online. Sadly, both games came up short — of course, when Rainbow Six Siege's only single-player content turned out to be a series of bland tutorials, fans were bound to be disappointed.
At the very least, Ubisoft is clearly listening: in a recent behind-the-scenes video, the publisher confirmed that the upcoming medieval combat title For Honor would feature some sort of single-player campaign:
"One of the big questions we received and feedback was about a solo campaign. So, we said that we will have a solo campaign, and I can promise you that we will have a solo campaign — it's one of the key subjects we're working on on the floor. I can't wait to show stuff to you guys, and we'll do it as early as possible, like we did with the multiplayer."
It's at least somewhat reassuring that the For Honor team isn't treating the game's single-player component as an afterthought. While there's no telling exactly what the solo campaign will actually play like (or if it'll be worth playing at all), the video suggests that the mode has been in the works for some time — hopefully, it'll be a bit more substantial than the bot matches gamers had to put up with in 2015.
For Honor is due out sometime later this year — expect to see more of the game at E3 2016.
