It didn't take long for Apple to dominate the smartwatch market.
New data from Juniper Research, as reported by Recode.net, shows that the Apple Watch has accounted for more than 50 percent of smartwatch shipments worldwide, surpassing top competitor Google and its Android smartwatches.
Juniper Research estimates that the Apple Watch tallied 51.5 percent of global shipments of smartwatches — for 8.8 million devices sold — of the total 17.1 million smartwatches shipped worldwide in 2015. By the same token, the same research firm says that Android Wear accounted for less than 10 percent of smartwatch sales last year.
These numbers already surpass expectations for the Apple Watch. Juniper believes part of the reason for the company's success with the wearable tech device is its 10,000 Apple Watch apps compared with only 4,000 being offered by Android Wear as of last spring.
That being said, though, there's still plenty of people to turn into believers, as Juniper also noted that 30 percent of customers surveyed said that they had no immediate plans to purchase a smartwatch and that they think they wouldn't even use the device, as reported by Recode.
Still, the customers on board seemingly appreciated having their smartphones synced with their watches for convenience and functionality.
"Several users and reviewers note that this simply shifts the benefit of notification to another location, rather than lessening the load," Juniper wrote, as reported by Recode.
