Hands-On With Razer’s New Ultra Portable Turned Gaming PC

Yes, Razer's got a gaming ultrabook, and yes, there's a catch. A pretty big one, namely that big box you see in the left corner of the picture. That's the Core, a box that essentially does all of the heavily graphical lifting for the skinny PC.

It's essentially a docking station that houses a desktop-level graphics card, so users can do some serious gaming. Without it, the Razer Blade Stealth is a pretty solid portable notebook book, but it's not exactly the sort of gamer's dream come true users have come to expect from the manufacturer.

And let's be honest, hauling around the Core isn't exactly convenient, though we all probably know a few gamers who have gone to much greater - and backbreaking - lengths to take a gaming experience with them. After all, most true gaming laptops aren't exactly what you'd call portable by most standards.

And in a lot of ways, really the notebook feels like more of a hub than a standalone device. The company had the Stealth on display plugged into an army of peripherals, including a monitor and a mouse, top of the Core. Thankfully, the thing's got plenty of ports.

There are some nice gaming touches here, beyond the Razer logo, namely, the programmable colored keys, which are triggered with the F keys. The are other solid features, like the 2,560 x 1,440 pixel touchscreen display, 8GB of memory, and 128GB of storage - and that's just the base-level $999 model.

The pricing on the Core has yet to be announced.
