Hellboy's adventures, at least those he's experiencing after death in Hellboy In Hell, will come to an end soon.
Artist and writer Mike Mignola states that the big red guy's adventures in Hades will end with issue #10 of the title.
"I was looking at what I had done, and coming off one of the stories I realized, 'Oh, we're further along in some way than I thought we were going to be," said Mignola to Vulture. "We got where we were going a lot faster' ... I had some fun stuff lined up that I was going to do, but if I did it, it was just going to soften the impact, it was just going to ramble more than it needed to ramble. I thought, If we're going there, let's just go there now. So, yes, we're wrapping up Hellboy in Hell."
Mignola created Hellboy in 1993 as a good-intentioned demon who got summoned from hell to Earth as a baby by the Nazis. Fortunately, the Allies found him and took him in, eventually putting him to work for the BPRD, an international organization that battles the forces of evil, including the Nazis.
In Hellboy In Hell, Hellboy has died at the hands of a witch, which sends him to the Abyss, where he struggles to find his way back to the world of the living. The ongoing series reveals much about Hellboy's origin story.
In addition to ending the run of Hellboy in Hell, Mignola also plans on taking some time off, although he's still committed to work on the B.P.R.D. series.
"It's been at least 25 years since I finished something and I didn't know what I was doing next — I've always had a project lined up," said Mignola. "I've painted in the past, but I only average about one painting a year, and the last painting I did, I actually really liked. So I thought, 'Gee, if I do a bunch of paintings, maybe I'll actually figure out what I'm doing instead of re-learning every year.' So I asked my wife, 'could I do this? Could I just take a year off and just paint?' "
Mignola also spoke about his Frankenstein Underground series, a spin-off of Hellboy: House of the Dead. The comic follows that monster into Hollow Earth.
