The Nintendo 2DS, the hingeless, 3D-lacking version of the Nintendo 3DS video game console, is finally coming to Japan in a big way: as part of four Pokémon-themed, color-coded bundles. There’s a red, blue, green, and yellow 2DS bundle — each color corresponding to the classic Game Boy Pokémon titles coming to the 3DS Virtual Console.
Rather than appearing in Japan and then making its way to the United States, the life cycle of the Nintendo 2DS has been the opposite. Whatever the reasons might be, that’s all set to change when the virtual versions of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow hit the market. Not only will each colored 2DS come with its respective Pokémon game preinstalled, each will also have Pokémon-based home themes, stickers, and a physical map based on the original game’s Kanto region.
Perhaps even more interesting to the Pokémon fanatics out there is that the bundles will also come with download codes for Mew, the mythical 151st Pokémon from the original games. Players will be able to play around with an official Mew once the virtual versions release, and there will apparently also be a way to redeem the code in Pokémon X, Y, Alpha Sapphire, and Omega Ruby — the latest generation of the Pokémon franchise.
It’s unclear at the moment whether the bundles will see release outside of Japan, especially given the fact that Pokémon Green is exclusive to the region. Which makes sense: the original titles were Red and Green in Japan, and the international versions released as Red and Blue. North America’s set to get Red, Blue, and Yellow for the 3DS Virtual Console on Feb. 27, 2016, which is also when the 2DS bundles and Japanese games will release in Japan. The bundles will reportedly launch for 9,980 yen, which is about $83.
