New Doctor Peter Capaldi is set to make his grand debut during "Doctor Who's" season eight premiere, and fans in a few lucky U.S. cities will have the chance to see all the TARDIS action on the big screen for a limited time.
BBC America is bringing the feature length season premiere, titled "Deep Breath," to movie theaters located in 12 U.S. cities on midnight of Aug. 23, with two more showings on Aug. 25 across an additional 550 theaters throughout the country, according to Time.
It won't be Capaldi or "Doctor Who's" first time on the silver screen. BBC America also showed the season seven episode "The Time of the Doctor" in a select number of theaters, an episode that just so happened to feature Capaldi's first actual appearance as the new Doctor. The season seven finale saw previous Doctor Matt Smith regenerating into the current Doctor, in order to use the energy to defeat the genocidal Daleks.
"Deep Breath" is said to take place in Victorian London, with companion Clara having to deal with the fact that her best friend has completely changed. According to the episode synopsis, the pair will have to learn to work together in order to battle and defeat a terrifying new monster.
Capaldi's new Doctor is much older than the previous incarnation, with Smith being the 11th and the youngest actor to ever portray the character on screen. Judging from the trailers released for the season so far, Capaldi's take on the Doctor might also be one of the darker and more serious ones yet, where he utters lines like "Tell me, am I a good man?" Clara, it seems, isn't so sure. The new season promises to take the TARDIS "into darkness."
Fan anticipation for the popular British television show has been high, and as a result the show has struggled containing multiple leaks prior to the premiere. Scripts of the first five episodes of season eight leaked in July, and two full episodes leaked online shortly after.
Comedian Chris Hardwick will be hosting a special pre and post premiere show on the small screen, which will include numerous guest appearances and behind the scenes footage, while season eight itself will include guest appearances from Keeley Hawes, Tom Riley, Samuel Anderson, Foxes, Neve McIntosh, Frank Skinner, Hermione Norris and Ben Miller.
The season premiere is written by Steven Moffat, directed by Ben Wheatley and, in addition to Capaldi, stars Jenna Coleman, Neve McIntosh, Catrin Stewart and Dan Starkey.
