Legendary electronic music producer Giorgio Moroder confirmed his involvement in the soundtrack of the latest installment of the Tron game series back in February. Now, Moroder has dropped a snippet of a new track on SoundCloud that could be associated with the game.
In an interview in February of this year, Moroder confirmed that Disney had enlisted him to work on the Tron: Legacy game soundtrack, and he has actually been working with superstar EDM artist and producer Skrillex on the project. "We have about five themes, electronic stuff," Moroder explained. "Let's see if he's interested in remixing or re-working one of the songs."
Now, at the end of the year, Moroder has uploaded a track to his SoundCloud page interestingly entitled "Run Program." A listen to the 1:47 track further piques our interest, as the aggressively dark electronic production sounds more like a game theme than most of Moroder's recent output, which is generally lighter, less intense and more uplifting.
The 75-year-old producing legend is widely credited with being one of the pioneers of electronic music. In the disco era, Moroder was influential in the use of synthesizers to create the sound that propelled Donna Summer into the spotlight as the face of the disco genre, and resulted in chart toppers that remain classics to this day, including "Bad Girls," "Last Dance," "Love to Love You, Baby," "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)," "Dim All the Lights," "MacArthur Park," "Hot Stuff," "On the Radio" and "I Feel Love."
Moroder went on to work with pop legends such as David Bowie, Janet Jackson and Blondie. He wrote and produced Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" from the Top Gun soundtrack, winning both the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1986. He also composed the soundtracks to numerous movies, including the classic 1983 film Scarface.
While Moroder's output and influence faded somewhat in the new millennium, he's made a huge comeback as of late, collaborating on Daft Punk's 2013 Random Access Memories album and producing or remixing tracks featuring pop stars such as Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Coldplay and Lady Gaga. Moroder's music has also been featured in top video games before, including both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
A collaboration between Moroder and Skrillex on the Tron: Legacy soundtrack would form a dream team of the most celebrated electronic producer of this generation with its most iconic producer of the past. "Run Program" doesn't appear to have any of Skrillex's signature, modern-day dubstep or EDM influences, so its most likely not a reflection of a collaboration between the two — yet.
