Nintendo has unveiled more details for its first-ever mobile game —- even if the word "game" doesn't necessarily do it justice.
Made in collaboration with DeNA Company, an online auction site-turned-mobile game developer, the free-to-download game, named Miitomo, acts more as a membership service for Nintendo fans, letting users link up with other users. It includes features like character add-ons, in-app purchases, and, as the Verge pointed out, somewhat resembles Nintendo's Tomodachi Life, a 3DS sim game.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, DeNA president Isao Moriyasu expanded on his company's partnership with the world's largest video game company, as well as developing something with a Nintendo flare.
"There's that distinct Nintendo feel to the game that gives you a certain comfort and nostalgia," said Moriyasu. "The user interface, feel and sound — it's all very Nintendo."
The DeNA president also added that communication will be a key element to Miitomo, with customizable Mii avatars for interplay and friend-finding capabilities by hooking up to user Facebook friend lists. Apt, considering "tomo" means "friend" in Japanese.
The in-app purchases that are available in the game are an interesting point, and include a litany of microtransactions, including the ability to swap real money with friends for items such as clothes for Mii avatars.
The game is also expected to include a series of minigames, though not all of them will be free through the app. Moriyasu also revealed that the company has already sought out partnerships with other companies, including Bandai Namco and Disney, to design Miitomo's in-app games.
Miitomo is scheduled to be released sometime in early 2016.
