eBay claims the crown for diversity in tech

With the release of its own diversity report, eBay has made a bid for being the most gender-equal tech company.

According to eBay's report, 42 percent of its 33,000 workers worldwide are women. This percentage is larger than those of other tech companies that have released diversity reports. Pinterest reported a 40 percent female workforce, Yahoo was about 37 percent women, Facebook was 31 percent, Twitter was 30 percent and Google likewise had 30 percent women in its report.

"We take diversity seriously. Since eBay was founded in 1995, we have believed in the power of technology to democratize commerce and create more opportunities for all. We believe in the same power of inclusion and opportunity inside our company. Enabling talented people to thrive matters. Diversity matters. It makes us stronger, and makes us better," the report from eBay states.

More women have positions in leadership at eBay, with 28 percent, compared to Twitter's 21 percent and Pinterest's 19 percent. according to the report. This is not surprising, considering eBay has a program called the Women's Initiative Network that encourages female employees to stay at the company and progress into leadership roles. According to the report, women in leadership positions have more than doubled because of the WIN program.

In terms of racial diversity, the company's report states that its workforce is 61 percent white and 39 percent minorities. Looking at leadership, the number increases to 72 percent white. This not far off from Twitter's report, which indicated a 59 percent white workforce. That number rises to a comparable 72 percent when focusing on leadership. Google stated that its workforce is 61 percent white. Facebook announced its employee diversity was 57 percent white. Yahoo's report had 50 percent of its workers as white.

The company also touts its support for LGBT employees in the report, stating, "Support for our LGBT workforce also has been a strong commitment. We are honored to have received a perfect score of 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index (CEI) every year since 2009. We actively recruit from the LGBT community and we provide progressive benefits. And we publicly advocate for equal rights for same-sex couples."

For fiscal year 2013, eBay had $16 billion in revenue.
