The Microsoft Surface Pen Can Now Be Programmed

The Microsoft Surface Pen is a great tool for digital artists, but it's about to get even better. Microsoft has announced a software update that will allow users to program different commands for the buttons on the stylus.

The Surface Pen has a three-way button that is programmed with different commands by default — one click launches OneNote, a double-click takes a screen shot and a press and hold summons Cortana.

Now, however, users can change that. The default functions of the Pen will remain the same, however, users who don't, for example, really ever take screen shots, can change the function of double-clicking. Users can also disable the functions entirely in case they don't want to be distracted by an accidental button click while they're working.

The new customization will be great for those who use a range of different apps. One use that might be helpful is the launch of Photoshop, perfect for many people who will be using the Surface Pen.

While the update isn't groundbreaking, it does add an extra layer of functionality and helps make the Surface experience even better. It's perhaps a little surprising it has taken Microsoft so long to get to this kind of customization, but better late than never.
