Vin Diesel revealed on his Instagram on Nov. 30 that his production company launched a Television Division along with a tidbit about "Merc City," a "Riddick" spin-off that follows the bounty hunters and mercenaries of the Riddick universe and, as of Dec. 16, that project is a step closer to becoming a real television series after One Race Films signed a deal with Universal Television.
The signed agreement is a multi-year deal that will have Vin Diesel and his production company producing television content for the network. The planned Riddick spin-off isn't just a plan anymore as well because it's one of the first projects One Race Television will undertake with NBC.
"I have dreamt about expanding the One Race brand into television and now we've found the perfect creative partners in Bob, Jen and the team at Universal Television," Diesel said about the deal. To ensure a high quality of output from One Race Television, Diesel brought former FOX Broadcasting Executive, Shana Waterman, on board.
"Vin is a true creative force as a producer... it's clear he will now also be an incredible asset to both the network and our television studio," NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said.
There's no word yet on whether Diesel will reprise his role for the spin-off but it's also possible that Riddick would make only a few appearances since he is busy with his own Diesel-centric projects. To be more specific, after coming off from "The Last Witch Hunter," he's now working on filming the sequel of "xXx" where he reprises his role as Xander Cage. For that, he is reuniting with Samuel L. Jackson who played Agent Augustus Gibbons and will also be welcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor as part of the new cast.
He also revealed that David Twohy, writer and director of the "Riddick" franchise, will begin writing the next chapter titled "Furia" this December.
