German video game developer Crytek revealed that it has been working on The Climb, a virtual reality (VR) rock climbing game that would literally take gamers to new heights. The game was developed exclusively for the Oculus Rift, which is nearing its launch day.
The Climb's mechanics is just what its title says. It is a free, unaided, solo rock climbing adventure so you can experience the thrill of scaling heights in the middle of a gorgeous mountain with only the goal at the top, a steep climb, and probably your virtual death at the bottom should you slip or fail to gain a steady grip.
Don't worry, though, because Crytek has no intention of shocking players too much. You'll just have to watch helplessly as the ground gets closer to you while you plummet downwards until the white screen blocks your entire view, then you can try again (if you're still up for another possible virtual death). In short, players will have to cast their fears aside to play the new game.
Crytek never said it was an easy game, after all, but what it did promise was an exhilarating solo adventure and a one-of-a-kind gaming experience, and both were delivered.
"The Climb invites players to experience the intensity of one of the world's most dangerous sports, and they'll truly feel the thrill of being thousands of meters above the ground with nothing but their skill and a few precarious handholds to rely on," said Cevat Yerli, founder, chief executive officer and president.
The current available locations are mostly in Asia, specifically, in a landscape inspired by Halong Bay in Vietnam. Just watch the demo and see for yourself.
What makes The Climb different from other VR games that have been demonstrated is that the controls rely mostly on the movement of the player's head. Yes, there's a floating hand in front of the player but where the hand moves to will depend on which direction the players will turn their head to. The reason behind Crytek's decision to implement that kind of control is timing. When Crytek began developing the game, the Oculus Touch was not out yet so it couldn't make use of the technology. What they did is to make use of what they did have, and use it at its full capacity. However, Crytek assures that the game supports both Oculus Touch and Xbox One controllers.
You'll probably need some ice pack after playing because you're really going to exert extra effort in craning your neck to direct your floating hands, but the view at the top is worth it because the 360-degree view is gorgeous.
The Climb really puts the "cry" in Crytek.
