The Pokémon-based fighting video game Pokkén Tournament pits a variety of different Pokémon like Suicune and Machamp against each other in much the same way as Tekken or Street Fighter would. The arcade game was long ago revealed to be coming to the Nintendo Wii U, and a recent announcement saw the reveal of a Pokkén Tournament Wii U console bundle. As it turns out, however, it’s not just the game that is heading to the Wii U: the arcade controller is coming along for the ride.
Interestingly, the special Pokkén Tournament controller seems to almost have more in common with traditional fighting game sticks than the Wii U Gamepad. Any form of analog stick is notably absent in favor of the directional pad and buttons alone. The special wired controller is based on the design of the arcade game’s controller, however, so it’s not like it came out of nowhere.
Compared with the Gamepad, however, it does look like something of a clunky design. The way that the standard Wii U controller is laid out is rather aesthetically pleasing as opposed to the Pokkén Tournament controller — even with a screen smack-dab in the middle of it. Gamepad’s at least slightly more about presentation, though, as compared with the special wired controller's definitive purpose.
The Pokkén Tournament Wii U controller is scheduled to release in Japan on March 18, 2016, alongside the game itself, for 3,480 yen, which converts to about $30. The game's scheduled to launch at some point in 2016 in North America, though it's unclear whether the controller will also make the journey across the ocean.
