The Moto 360 is the most recognized Android Wear smartwatch to date, and this has to do a lot with the rounded watch face design. It is the smartwatch many Android Wear fans are looking forward to, and Samsung knows this, which might be the reason why the company is working on a smartwatch with a similar design.
Good ole Samsung has signed for a trio of design patents for smartwatches that are more rounded than the squarish design we've seen from almost all smartwatch manufacturer. The design of all three watches vary where curviness is concerned, but the general design is the same.
Interestingly enough, all three designs have a camera on the band, which is similar to the earlier Galaxy Gear. In addition, one of the watches has its charging pin on the clasp, instead of on the watch itself. It makes us wonder if this particular smartwatch will have its battery housed on in the band, similar to Apple's iTime patent.
It is clear from this patent that Samsung is interested in a smartwatch with a rounded face, though we're not certain if the company will ever deliver in the coming months or years. In fact, we fail to see why Samsung would pass up on such an opportunity, especially if the Moto 360 turns out to be a product loved by the majority of Android Wear fans.
All patents seen here were filed back in March of last year, which was before Samsung experienced very poor Galaxy Gear sales.
Can a rounded face Samsung smartwatch topple the Moto 360?
It is possible for this to happen, especially if the company launches a rounded Galaxy smartwatch before Motorola. The key incentive here would be price, and we're almost certain that Samsung is in a better position to launch a high-end smartwatch with a rounded face that is cheaper than anything Motorola has to offer. Furthermore, Samsung Galaxy brand name is well known around the world, and that alone would give the company the edge.
Still, one cannot simply write off Motorola as the company is now owned by Lenovo, one of the biggest players in the consumer technology arena.
