Earlier this week, Google's parent company, Alphabet, renamed its health and medicine division from Google Life Sciences to Verily.
And Verily is already hard at work, so much so that the newly-named company is already developing its own robotic surgery spinoff. Engadget is reporting that Verily, in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson, has erected a new company called Verb Surgical.
Although Verb Surgical hasn't announced a specific project, it sounds as if the company will be bringing its technologies to the operating table.
"In the coming years, Verb Surgical aims to develop a comprehensive surgical solutions platform that will incorporate leading-edge robotic capabilities and best-in-class medical device technology for operating room professionals," said a Google press release statement to Engadget. "The goal of Verb Surgical is to develop these new technologies in partnership with surgeons and hospitals to enable better patient outcomes, improve access to minimally invasive surgery, and achieve greater hospital efficiency."
Wired additionally reports that Verb has hired over a hundred employees, who will be based out of the same Mountain View, CA. headquarters as Google.
In addition, Verily CEO Andrew Conrad told Wired that Johnson & Johnson likely won't be the last outside company that Verb Surgical collaborates with in the future.
How long do you think it will take before Verily and Verb Surgical makes real advances in the medical field and more specifically, the operating room? It will be exciting to see what Verb Surgical develops first, incorporating robotics in the medical field.
