Mark Zuckerberg has published a blog post that urges people to not succumb to cynicism in the world, despite bigotry and hatred from people like Donald Trump, who recently called for a ban for Muslims traveling to the U.S.
The blog post highlights Zuckerberg's desire for Facebook to be a place for everyone, with the post being a bold move considering that it could alienate some users who might align with Trump's stance on such issues. Facebook as a company, however, is comfortable with spreading a message of tolerance despite the fact that others might choose to simply not comment on the issue.
"As a Jew, my parents taught me that we must stand up against attacks on all communities. Even if an attack isn't against you today, in time attacks on freedom for anyone will hurt everyone," said Zuckerberg in his post. "If you're a Muslim in this community, as the leader of Facebook I want you to know that you are always welcome here and that we will fight to protect your rights and create a peaceful and safe environment for you."
Zuckerberg himself was the subject of cynicism earlier in the month, when he pledged to donate $45 billion of his wealth toward helping humanity move forward over his lifetime. Many suggested that Zuckerberg was simply trying to avoid taxes, however, the Facebook CEO tried to alleviate those concerns by explaining that the Chan Zuckerberg entity, which is the company that will handle the money being used for human advancement, is being structured as an LLC, so it will still be taxed.
Facebook itself has long tried to include everyone, even at the expense of some of its values. The company has received criticism for going along with censorship laws in certain countries in the Middle East, however, while some suggest Facebook should simply not operate in those countries, Zuckerberg holds to the idea that helping people connect with each other will promote liberty and freedom, even if the freedom of speech is limited in some countries.
