Windows Phone 8.1 update will have support for smart cases, bigger devices

Microsoft has yet to fully launch the Windows Phone 8.1 update but much talk has been going around about the new features of the mobile OS. One important update includes creating and managing folders right on the start screen, together with other software and hardware-related updates.

Aside from the folder support, Microsoft is also reportedly adding support for smart cases. This is similar to the functionality of the LG QuickCircle and HTC Dot View case that responds to how the phone owner uses the case. Open the case and the phone will wake up from sleep or display information you set.

Interactive cases are relatively new but Microsoft adding support for smart cases is expected to advance case technology. An improved case support made possible by the Windows Phone platform should be interesting. It's a not entirely a new thing but at least Microsoft is making it possible on Windows Phones very soon.

No need to buy a new phone. Simply get a new smart case and let Microsoft add new functionalities to it via a Windows Phone 8.1 software update. With this, developers are also expected to take advantage of the special feature soon enough. Interactive case accessories might also proliferate in the market.

Another important update coming with the Windows Phone 8.1 is for Cortana. The Windows Phone's personal voice assistant will have a phonebook entry to trigger speech when inside a vehicle.

The Windows Phone 8.1 update will also include the following enhancements: Bluetooth music through aptX, Voice over LTE or VoLTE support, custom lock screens by manufacturer, medium Live Tile for Store app, as well as, support for bigger devices like a 7-inch tablet and any display with 1280 x 800 screen resolution.

Microsoft has yet to make a formal announcement but the Windows Phone 8.1 software update should be ready this coming August. No doubt about this one is coming because Microsoft already revealed the new folder support accidentally on its website.

The Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 is also believed to be with phone manufacturers as of this moment and is being tested. The early version that is expected to launch this August will be for developers only.
