GoFundMe Campaign Raises Donations In The Aftermath Of San Bernardino Shooting

After the bloody San Bernardino massacre, a GoFundMe campaign was put in motion in order to help the victims' families.

Mayor Carey Davis announced that the donations are for helping those affected by the shooting, and the initiative was started by the City Hall and Common Council.

"On behalf of the Mayor and Common Council of the City of San Bernardino, this campaign has been created to support the victims of the shooting," says the GoFundMe page.

The campaign debuted as a success, with over $11,000 raised in the first hour. The goal is about $100,000. At the time of the writing, the raised sum is around $41,145.

"Though we are experiencing immense grief, we will not be paralyzed. We will continue to move forward and grow together as a community," says the campaign page.

During the morning of Dec. 2, at the Inland Regional Center, two shooters carrying automatic weapons opened fire on people who were there for a holiday event. The outcome was tragic: 14 were killed and 21 people were injured. The day became a staple of gun-caused tragedy, raising (again) questions regarding the opportunity of gun-control laws in the United States.

The San Bernardino incident was the worst mass shooting on American soil, after the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in 2012. The tragedy that happened in Sandy Hook three years ago left 20 children dead, as well as six staff members.

Even if the tragedy has gained worldwide attention and brought intense media coverage, the families still feel the void left behind by the victims, and the surviving people have their own trauma to go through.

"It is my hope that these funds will assist the victims with the transitional period they will soon endure," Davis says.

The raised money will be split equally and sent to the victims through an official trust fund. GoFundMe showed its support to the victims by renouncing all fares for the funds distributed for this cause.
