Woman charged for trying to engage hired killer to get rid of daughter-in-law

A 70-year old woman in Middleburg, Florida has been charged for attempting to have her daughter-in-law killed by a hired killer.

Per a police report, on October 9, Diana Reaves Costarakis reportedly offered $5,000 to an undercover detective (when she first met him at a Home Depot) to murder her daughter-in-law. Costarakis gave the detective $500 as the first payment along with a photograph of her daughter-in-law Angela Costarakis, as well as the address and description of her car.

A day later, the grandmother gave another $1,000 and told the killer that her daughter-in-law wore expensive jewelry which could be stolen and sold in lieu of the final payment.

"The suspect told the detective that her daughter-in-law wore expensive jewelry, and when the job was done, he could take the jewelry off the victim's body," said the sheriff's office. "She stated the diamonds could be removed and sold without a trace and that money could be used towards the final payment."

When asked by the undercover cop if Costarakis wanted her daughter-in-law dead, she replied: "If you don't, I will."

Angela Costarakis told WJXT TV that she had no clue of the same and wondered why her mother-in-law would want to kill her.

"I am beyond sad and it breaks my heart because it messes up the family," she said. "I have compassion. I don't want to see anyone spend the rest of their life in jail. However, I am still just dealing with it. I just found out. I have not wrapped my head around it," said Angela. "She told me three weeks ago, gave me a big old hug and said I am so glad we are great friends. I guess if I was out of the way she could have her son and her granddaughter."

Hank Reaves, brother of Diana Reaves Costarakis says this is unlike his sister.

"I guess that is the only postive part of the whole thing, she wasn't able to do, if she did it. I don't know," said Reaves.

Costarakis has been arrested and charged with criminal solicitation and criminal conspiracy, which are capital felony crimes.
