Iris recognition technology is picking up steam and it seems that Samsung and LG are gearing up to implement the technology in their 2016 flagships.
Fingerprint scanners started out as a top-notch feature gracing just a few elite handsets, but it didn't take long for this type of authentication to become a must-have feature for high-end flagships. More companies started launching premium smartphones with fingerprint scanners and the fingerprint recognition tech is now quite common.
Iris scanners, on the other hand, are just starting to gain ground. Iris recognition is considered safer and more advanced than fingerprint recognition, and it's expected to be the next big thing for high-end smartphones. The technology can already be found in a few handsets, and more are expected to arrive next year.
Microsoft already launched its latest Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL with iris scanners, and recently touted that more devices will get the treat soon. It appears that other OEMs will follow suit as well.
According to latest news from Korea, both Samsung and LG are planning to launch flagships with fingerprint recognition technology in 2016. Since iris recognition has stirred lots of interest already, it makes sense for heavyweight smartphone makers to follow the growing trend and improve their offerings.
Competition is fierce on the fast-paced smartphone market and keeping up with the latest trends and technologies is a must for OEMs who want to stay at least relevant, if not ahead of the curb.
As GforGames points out, Samsung and LG were already rumored to be planning smartphones equipped with iris scanners, as such rumors started to surface a while back. The Samsung Galaxy S5 and LG G3 were rumored to come with iris scanners before they made their official debut, but obviously that was not the case. The LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 didn't include iris recognition technology either, but the 2016 flagships from LG and Samsung may finally make the move.
One theory could be that Samsung and LG started testing iris recognition tech for their top-end smartphones a while ago, but ultimately decided that the technology was not ready for implementation just yet. Some more research, tests and prototypes could pave the way for next-generation flagships to have iris scanners on board, but it remains to be seen.
The claim that LG G5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 could be the ones to finally boast iris recognition capabilities is not too far-fetched, but nothing is officially confirmed at this point. As always in such cases, take this news with a grain of salt.
