Fox Releases First Image Of Mr. Freeze From 'Gotham'

Mr. Freeze arrives on Gotham tonight, and in anticipation of his appearance, Fox just released the first photo of the character on the series.

The photo, which comes courtesy of USA Today, shows Victor Fries (Nathan Darrow) in costume, complete with his signature freeze gun. The costume is currently a little less conspicuous than his comic book outfit, but it's still enough to make the character easily identifiable to DC Comics fans.

Although Mr. Freeze's story won't get told on Gotham until next year, tonight's episode marks the first appearance of the character on the series. His motivation, though, lies with saving his terminally ill wife Nora (Kristen Hager), although it's likely the show won't get into that until later.

"Victor has one central intimate human connection, and that's with his wife," said Darrow. "There's something really, really interesting and vulnerable and difficult about that. Of course, that is threatened by her illness. In some of the research I did on the character as he has evolved in the comic book, he has a more tenuous connection with humanity and his own humanity, and she's it. He is applying all his talents and skills and energies to maintaining that."

As the cryogenics expert for Wayne Enterprises, Darrow unveiled that Fries is on a "special, independent project" for the company. Could that have something to do with the freeze gun? It's likely, although when asked about the weapon, Darrow only mentioned that Mr. Freeze will get to do some things we haven't seen him do in comics, film or on TV.

"I feel like he does go to work each day, but I think he gets time to work from home and it feels like his bosses are OK with that because he's specially talented and he's working on something that could be potentially of great value for who he works for," said Darrow. "So he's pretty much involved in this pursuit and it's rather solitary, as you might imagine."

In DC Comics, Fries is a scientist who attempts to cure his wife. However, as is usually the case with superheroes and villains, there's a horrible accident that results in him having to wear a cryogenic suit for the rest of his life. In this first image of the scientist on Gotham, though, he doesn't yet have the full suit: perhaps that comes later on the series.

Gotham airs on Fox on Monday nights.
