Is a 'Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3' game still possible?

Do you want to play more Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, meatbag?

Obsidian Entertainment wants to make another Star Wars RPG. The developers behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 pursued the creation of a new Star Wars game in the past, but are still waiting to hear back from Disney about the possibility.

While making the rounds about their upcoming computer RPG Pillars of Eternity, which they funded through Kickstarter, project director Josh Sawyer and lead producer Brandon Adler told IGN that the idea of a KOTOR3 still appealed to Obsidian.

"I think there are a lot of the people at the studio that would like to do Knights of the Old Republic 3," Sawyer said. "I think at that time LucasArts was really focused on what they considered to be extreme, extreme blockbusters and even though the Knights of the Old Republic series was pretty successful, it just never seemed like something that was going to happen at that time. Having said that, a lot of time has passed. I know there are a lot of people at the studio who are really interested in doing a project like that."

"It's something that comes up every three to six months," Adler added. "We bring it up and talk about it. Not anything terribly serious, but we just say 'wouldn't it be cool if?' and just develop some ideas for what we'd do with that stuff."

So while Lucas Arts initially passed on Obsidian working on a new Star Wars RPG, the situation has changed with Disney's purchase of LucasFilm and LucasArts in October 2012.

The original KOTOR, developed by BioWare, was released in 2003. KOTOR2, from Obsidian, came out in 2004.

There had been reports last year of Obsidian pitching a different Star Wars role-playing game, which would be set between "Star Wars Episode III" and "Episode IV," but Sawyer and Adler did not share any information about that with IGN.

BioWare launched in 2011 the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. The developer labeled it as KOTOR3 to KOTOR6, but fans have still clamored for a direct sequel to the KOTOR series.

Beyond the MMO, game publisher Electronic Arts is reportedly working on two other Star Wars games. EA has already announced a new Star Wars: Battlefront game, being made by DICE, the team behind the Battlefield series. Meanwhile, Visceral Games is reportedly working on an open-world action game akin to the recent Batman Arkham games.
