A tweet from the UK branch of 2K Games has sparked people's interest. An image from a billboard from the BioShock games' setting of Rapture is shown. And the accompanied text literally teases, "Oooo, what COULD this mean?!"
Great question: what could this teaser image actually be teasing? Here are the possibilities:
1. BioShock Infinite 2 / BioShock 3 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
2. BioShock Infinite for PlayStation Vita
3. BioShock or BioShock Infinite or BioShock Trilogy remastered for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
4. BioShock app for iOS.
5. BioShock movie or television series.
6. Something completely off the wall.
None of these possibilities are impossible. After Irrational Games, the developer of BioShock and BioShock Infinite, was disbanded, 2K had stated it will continue to make games in the series. That could mean a completely new game. A BioShock Infinite 2 that is similar to the original would be historically akin to what the company published with BioShock 2.
And there had been plans for a BioShock game for PlayStation Vita, before that fizzled out.
A remastered version of one, or all, of the BioShock games may be the most likely candidate for this tease. It will be the quickest and easiest to make out of all of these possibilities. Besides, 2K and its parent company Take Two have already announced they will be publishing a remastered version of Rockstar Games's best-seller Grand Theft Auto V, so it is not out of the realm of possibility.
It could be a promo for a BioShock or BioShock Infinite game or app for iOS. People point to the apple imagery of the particular billboard chosen for the tease as being a hint of the coming announcement.
The most far-fetched reason for such a tease would be the return of a "BioShock" film. One had been in development at Universal in 2008, to be directed by Gore Verbinski, who made "The Pirates of the Caribbean" films. The writer/producer/director of the BioShock game, Ken Levine, even wrote a movie script. Unfortunately budget issues delayed the film and then finally killed it. So perhaps the budget issues have finally been fixed. Or maybe there was some sort of compromise made and a more thorough television show is the result?
Lastly, there is always room for some extreme surprise no one is expecting. "BioShock" cereal. A "BioShock" clothing line. BioShock for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. There is already a "BioShock Infinite" board game, so that's covered.
The timing of the tweet, the first day of San Diego Comic Con, does not seem like a coincidence either. Stay tuned for any developments.
