Jennifer Lawrence has made a name for herself in the past few years as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. Now, it looks like she's headed for the other side of the fence (or the camera) as she signs on to direct "Project Delirium."
While Lawrence once said that she wanted to direct a comedy (Amy Schumer, are you listening?), her actual first jab at directing is about a story that's no laughing matter. Described by the actress as "like an acid experiment gone terribly wrong," "Project Delirium" is based on an article published by The New Yorker in 2012 tackling mental warfare in the 1960s with a focus on the military doctors who ran experiments on soldiers during the Cold War.
"I've wanted to direct since I was 16 and always thought I should start making steps towards that," said Lawrence, noting that she's finally moving forward with those plans now because she was not ready for it earlier. Now, she actually feels that she's ready to become a director.
Backstage at the 2014 Golden Globes, the "Hunger Games" star had already expressed her intentions to step behind the camera, adding how her passion to direct began around the same time she did her first movie. Still, she didn't want to venture into directing too early, so her directorial debut took a while to materialize.
Shortly after the last installment of the "Hunger Games" finally hit the big screen, Lawrence was revealed to be Entertainment Weekly's Entertainer of the Year. At just 25 years old, the actress already has an Oscar (for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook") and more than a handful of box office hits.
David Russell, who directed "Silver Linings Playbook," said that he had the privilege of watching Lawrence grow into a woman after working with her. So many things are happening for the actress and it's a lot for anyone her age, he said. However, things are falling into place for Lawrence and he's glad that she's finding her own voice.
There's no word yet on when "Project Delirium" is expected to be released.
