If the kind of reception GoPro received when it launched an app for the Xbox 360 community is any indication, the Xbox One app should anticipate a warm welcome.
Launched in April, GoPro's Channel on the Xbox 360 has recorded close to 500,000 downloads, with users spending 18 minutes every session watching videos on the channel on the average. To celebrate its launch on the Xbox One, GoPro commissioned four exclusive videos that are only available via the app until next week. Two of the users tapped by the company for the exclusive videos said they were just like all the others inspired by GoPro videos to make their own and post them online. They never thought GoPro would get in touch with them to subsequently ask for new videos for the launch.
"User-generated content is huge on Xbox and is expected to continue to grow as GoPro joins other popular apps like YouTube and Twitch. The Xbox-GoPro relationship helps support GoPro's initiative to grow content distribution and expand community reach worldwide, and we're very excited to participate in these efforts with the launch on Xbox One," said Xbox Wire.
Before Xbox 360 and Xbox One, GoPro videos were only available on YouTube. But since the first video was posted four years ago, GoPro's YouTube channel has gained two million subscribers logging 521 million views. This was a sign for the company so the GoPro reinvested in making videos to cater to its customers. The experience of watching GoPro videos on YouTube and the gaming consoles though are different.
"Bringing the GoPro Channel to Xbox One has been a top demand from fans this year. GoPro athletes and fans alike can curate their favorite videos on their big screens right next to their favorite Xbox One games, and it's super easy to switch between the two. I love that you can also buy GoPro cameras and gear right from the app," added Larry Hryb, Microsoft's Xbox Live Director of Programming. Hryb is also known around the Xbox community as "Major Nelson."
San Diego Comic Con attendees will have the opportunity to test the app at the Xbox Lounge this weekend, with teaser clips from exclusive content and a playlist of videos produced by GoPro and generated by users being made available.
GoPro on Xbox One will be available in the U.S., Australia, Austria, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland and Iran.
