The release of the third installment in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns saga is coming to a comic store near you tomorrow, but you can catch up on Miller's past Batman work for cheap thanks to a sale over at digital comic retailer Comixology.
From Nov. 24 to Nov. 29, fans or Miller's darker-than-usual take on Bruce Wayne and Gotham City can pick up The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, Batman: Year One and All Star Batman & Robin Vol. 1 for $6.99 a piece.
Most of it is essential Batman reading. In Batman: Year One, Miller shows readers a young Bruce Wayne just beginning his war on crime, and all the mistakes that come with an inexperienced Batman patrolling the streets. In The Dark Knight Returns, Miller takes fans to the other side of the spectrum, depicting an old, battered Bruce Wayne returning from retirement to don the cape and cowl of Batman once again.
All Star Batman & Robin, which Miller worked on with Jim Lee, is a solid read as well, even if isn't considered mandatory reading like Year One and The Dark Knight Returns.
Of all the works on sale, the only one that is to be avoided at all costs is The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Even at a $6.99 price point, Miller's crudely drawn and disjointed sequel to his most famous work is still the definition of disappointment.
How bad is it? So bad that when DC recently began posting images from the graphic novel on their official Batman Facebook page to help promote The Dark Knight III, fans lashed out in the comments to remind DC that nobody wants to remember The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Read it only if you are curious how bad a comic can be. Otherwise, stay far, far away.
Thankfully, The Dark Knight III looks to be promising. While Miller has became a bit of a wild card in his old age, his partnership with super-star writer Brian Azzarello on The Dark Knight III means fans will definitely want to pay attention. If you haven't yet read some of Miller's most important works or have simply been waiting to own a digital copy of them, this sale is hard to pass up.
