The hacktivist organization Anonymous has claimed its latest victim, the Kenyan military, via the micro-blogging site Twitter.
Reports suggest the group used the Twitter feed to accuse the Kenyan government of corruption and used the platform as a means of spreading awareness to the general population over what it claims are abuses from the military and the government.
As of press time, it appears the Twitter account @kdfinfo, which was the property of the Kenya Defense Forces, remains in the hands of the hackers, as the latest message from the feed does continue to attack the military and the government.
"Account hacked Again by @Anon_0x03 and Anonymous Kenya F* YOU ARMY!" it reads.
Anonymous has been a leading hacker group and in the past few years has been able to get into some of the most secure websites on the planet, including the CIA's own page a few years ago. The group claims it is attempting to deliver information about social justice and criminal activity to the general public through its hacking into accounts and websites.
The last official message from the Kenyan military appears to have been posted July 4, and since then it has been reported Anonymous remains in control of the Twitter feed.
The @Anon_0x03 account has a history of protest hacking, and has been publishing messages promoting justice for Palestine, Ecuador and the ongoing Israeli attack on Gaza.
Ironically, it has also posted links to reports on corruption within the Kenyan Defense Force.
Reports do, however, indicate that a number of the messages pinpointing corruption charges against the military and the government have been removed by the @kdfinfo admins.
"All of you who have stolen money #Kenya... We are coming after you." said one.
And the Kenyan military is not the only organization that apparently has been attacked. According to the @Anon_0x03 account, it has retweeted a number of messages from others who have claimed to have successfully hit the Integrated Financial Management Information System of Kenya and the Ministry of Immigration and Registration of Persons of Kenya.
Anonymous has created a lot of interest for its social media savvy and its high-profile attacks in recent years, with many supporting the illegal hacking of major government sites to deliver messages of social justice and corruption charges against their foes. Governments have been able to do little against the group due to their maintaining near 100 percent anonymity.
