Despite the fact that the game was actually released on all three major platforms, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Star Wars: Battlefront is a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Sony has been marketing the game as if it's a first-party title: every piece of media, from trailers to screen shots to TV commercials, has featured Sony's branding in one shape or another.
Now, a week after launch, it seems like Sony's aggressive marketing is already paying off. The Player Stats Network, a third-party website devoted to tracking online activity in a number of different games, just released a standalone Star Wars: Battlefront stat-tracking site. It's relatively bare-bones compared with the full website, but it does offer up some interesting insights into how well Star Wars: Battlefront is doing ... and how the different versions stack up to one another.
Basically, the stats are broken up into three categories: current PC players, current Xbox One players and current PS4 players. The site also tracks player numbers over a 24-hour period, and both stats are saying the same thing: the PlayStation 4 version of Star Wars: Battlefront is the most popular by far.
As of this writing, the site shows that roughly 30,000 people are playing on PC, 53,000 are playing on Xbox One and over 115,000 are playing on PlayStation 4. On top of that, these are stats from the middle of a work day, which isn't exactly known for high-traffic gaming sessions — even so, the PlayStation 4 is bigger by a wide margin.
The numbers are a bit closer when looking at the 24-hour period: PC is still in third with approximately 48,000 players, the Xbox One follows at just under 105,000 players and the PlayStation 4 wins again with 183,000 players.
In retrospect, the numbers aren't all that surprising: the PlayStation 4 has outsold the Xbox One by a wide margin, and then there's Sony's huge marketing push. If there's any real surprise here, it's that the PC version of the game is nowhere near as popular as its console counterparts. Given how popular DICE's Battlefield games are on the platform, many assumed that its popularity would carry over to Battlefront ... apparently, that's not happening.
EA and DICE have yet to reveal exactly how well Star Wars: Battlefront is doing — but with 200,000 people playing during the middle of the day, it's likely that the game is doing just fine when it comes to sales.
