Alex Hirsch, creator of the popular original Disney animated series Gravity Falls, revealed via Tumblr on Friday, November 20th, that the fan favorite would be reaching its natural conclusion soon. In other words, there's only two more episodes before the series is over and done.
Gravity Falls, for the uninitiated, follows the exploits of the Pines family - Dipper, Mabel, and Stan - and friends as they encounter and explore the weird history of the town of Gravity Falls. For whatever reason, the place seems to be a hub for the supernatural and strange.
This is actually a long time coming, it turns out. According to Hirsch, he'd made the decision to tell a contained story a long time ago, but he'd been prevented from making any official announcement until now. He also suggests that the reason he was prevent from doing so is that the folks in charge were hoping he'd change his mind.
"The first thing to know is that the show isn't being cancelled - it's being finished. This is 100% my choice, and its [sic] something I decided on a very long time ago," says Hirsch in his post. "I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer - a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to payoff."
At the very end of his announcement, Hirsch notes that all this means is that Gravity Falls - with him involved - is done for the time being. "I know that there will be many fans who will be sad to see the Pines family go," he says, "but just because I've finished the story I wanted to tell doesn't necessarily mean we will never see Dipper, Mabel, [and] Stan again." Instead, this is more the end of the chapter that Hirsch and his crew began in 2012. There's no telling what the future might bring.
Gravity Falls is scheduled to officially end with the one-hour series finale "Weirdmageddon III" after the penultimate episode - "Weirdmageddon 2: Escape from Reality" - airing tonight, November 23rd. That rounds the series out with a grand total of 40 full episodes. As of writing, there's no official air date for the finale.
