The Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone is finally available to U.S. online customers. There is a $50 discount available, too.
Even with the $50 off, the price tag is still around $700 for the awaited smartphone from the Japanese electronic manufacturer. The price could be too high for some consumers.
As a news report notes, the high-end Sony smartphone went on sale over the weekend. It is reportedly only available off contract. It is also only available through the U.S. Sony store on the web. It was widely reported that the phone was out of stock and on back order.
Some suggest that with a high price tag of $700, only hardcore Sony fans will pick up the new smartphone right away. It was also somewhat criticized for the availability of the phone so soon after a launch date. The company reportedly didn't offer any timeline for when a new batch of the gadgets would become available to ship.
The phone, when available that is, ican be obtained in purple, white and black colors. The unlocked smartphone makes use of a wide variety of available bands of LTE connectivity, reports indicate.
The features of the Xperia Z2 seem impressive. The smartphone features a 5-inch 1080p display, 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, a microSD slot that supports up to 128 GB cards and Android 4.4 KitKat. There are both rear- and front-facing cameras on the Z2. The rear-facing camera boasts 20.7-megapixel resolution. The front-facing camera is only capable of 2.2-megapixel resolution.
Some say it will be a while before the Xperia Z2 catches up in terms of sales to other popular, high-end phones with massive hype such as the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, or the LG G3 models on the market. It is not clear whether the device will become available with U.S. wireless carriers or not.
As one source points out, Sony is trying to find a way to break into the high-end smartphone market, which has been dominated by others like Apple, HTC and Samsung. It has been building steam slowly.
Sony's CEO, Kazuo Hirai, has said that mobile will be a key factor in the direction Sony will be heading in the future. The Xperia Z2 is a step toward that path.
