The popular online anime streaming platform Crunchyroll has added the highlyanticipated Digimon Adventure tri anime to its catalog. The series, produced by Toei Animation, is the latest addition to the long-running Digimon franchise and follows the heroes of the initial 1999 series several years after the conclusion of their previous adventures.
In short, the "DigiDestined" are back.
For those unfamiliar with Digimon, the basic idea is that there's a virtual world parallel to our own filled with digital monsters — thus "Digimon" — living out their lives. These creatures partner with humans to face threats to the Digital World and beyond. The original group featured in the franchise was the focus for two series, thus the "tri" in the latest incarnation. It's unclear exactly how any of the series produced after the first two fit into Digimon Adventure tri, or if they do at all.
Here's the synopsis, straight from the project's website:
It's been six years since that summer adventure when Taichi Yagami and the rest of the DigiDestined crossed over to the Digital World. And nearly three years have passed since the final battle between Hikari Yagami's group and BelialVamdemon. As the peaceful days passed by, at some point the gate to the Digital World closed. Not even the DigiDestined know what caused this, and time alone continues to pass.
On one such day, a Kuwagamon suddenly appears in Odaiba. Its rampage leaves the town in ruins, and the people there in turmoil. Taichi happens to catch sight of the Kuwagamon, and he chases after it all by himself in an effort to halt its rampage. But there's nothing he can do against a Kuwagamon.
"It's no use... I can't do anything about this alone..."
Just as the Kuwagamon roars and attacks Taichi, his Digivice begins to emit a bright light ...
"Taichi, look how big you've grown!"
With the sound of that nostalgic voice, the story once again begins to move in a big way.
For its part, Crunchyroll appears to have broken up the initial movie (Digimon Adventure tri. Saikai) of the six-part anime film series that is Digimon Adventure tri into four episodes — all of which are available to premium subscribers now — with further streaming plans for the upcoming movies expected to be revealed in Winter 2016. The first film in the series starts its limited Japanese theatrical release Saturday, Nov. 21, with a release for the other five not yet set.
