America is about to run on it even more.
On Wednesday, Dunkin' Donuts began testing mobile ordering in 124 franchise locations in Portland, ME. and 19 locations are trying out delivery service in Dallas with franchises in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington and Los Angeles expected to also deliver coffee to customers, as reported by Bloomberg.
In Dallas, in particular, the company says customers can order online and get coffee, sandwiches and of course, doughnuts, delivered in 45 minutes or less in a service powered by the DoorDash app, which recently announced deliveries of Kentucky Fried Chicken, as well.
It's all a part of Dunkin's effort to keep up with Starbucks, which already allows customers to make their orders prior to actually picking them up at the actual stores.
"The morning space and the coffee space are incredibly crowded," Scott Hudler, vice president of Dunkin' Donuts global consumer engagement told Bloomberg. "Speed is one of our brand differentiators."
He added: "This is how the next generation of consumers are going to engage with brands. This is the future of the restaurant business."
The news service adds that Dunkin' hopes to hook customers via its new mobile ordering and delivery features, even building loyalty and possibly even increasing sales all via the convenient service. Dunkin' Donuts is already playing catch up to Starbucks on many fronts, though, considering it only started its rewards program in January 2014 and counts 3.6 members to Starbucks' 10.4 million.
Dunkin' needs the boost from this updated service, considering Bloomberg additionally reported that the company had its worst stock decline last month since going public in 2011. The competition has never been arguably as steep with Taco Bell offering breakfast and McDonald's making breakfast items available all day.
