One of the staples of many board game enthusiasts' libraries is the multi-player game “Settlers of Catan.” The popular 1995 game was given a new look and renamed to simply “Catan” when the fifth edition of the game was released in June 2015.
If you haven't gotten your hands on this new set, which will be the standard for all expansions and competitions of “Catan” moving forward, head on over to Amazon right now. The game is currently listed at the cheapest price it has even been at just $38.65.
According to reports, ever since the game was first published 20 years ago, it has been translated into 30 different languages and multiple editions and expansions have been sold, however, they did not necessarily follow the same standards in size or design. This inconsistency made it challenging for players to mix and match their different variations of “Settlers of Catan.”
But the fifth edition was specifically designed to address and fix those issues. The box was standardized at portrait orientation and all of the game's pieces will not follow the same dimensions set in this edition.
The official rules for “Catan” were also officially revised in order to ease in newer players into the game, and to clarify some issues players came across in the past as well.
Inside the box, “Catan Fifth Edition” is still the familiar “Settlers of Catan” just with a nice face lift and consistency for those who can't get enough of the game and purchase every single expansion there is.
The artwork on the box and on the board itself, the card, tiles, and other graphical assets of the game were still created by the same artist.
“The material used in the tiles is the same as the fourth edition, printed after July 2013. The tile size and cut all remain the same as the fourth edition, and wood components remain the same colors and come from the same supplier," described Robert T. Carty, Jr., the vice president of sales and marketing for Mayfair Games which publishes “Catan.”
It looks like Klaus Teuber's game is still going strong as ever. So no need to wait any longer. Grab your own board game from Amazon and get ready to “Trade, Build, and Settle” in the game of “Catan.”
