Time Warner Cable plans to bring 1Gbps connection to Los Angeles

Time Warner Cable (TWC) is planning to bring broadband Internet speeds of up to one gigabyte per second to Los Angeles residences, businesses and government offices.

TWC is the second largest broadband service provider in the U.S. and has millions of customers using the services across 29 states. On Friday, July 18, the company announced that it is participating in the City of Los Angeles' request for information (RFI) process to develop and provide high speed broadband of up to 1Gbps.

TWC already has broadband infrastructure in Los Angeles and provided details of information regarding its current as well as future product and network enhancements, which will enable the company to provide high speed broadband connection to the city.

Peter Stern, who is the executive vice president and chief strategy, people and corporate development officer at TWC suggests that the company has invested over $1.5 billion in the last five years to develop the broadband infrastructure in Los Angeles. The company's "Gigasphere" technology puts it in place to offer 1Gbps broadband speeds as early as 2016. The company says that it will take advantage of its existing network to deliver faster and uninterruptable broadband service in Los Angeles when compared to other providers.

"We believe the introduction of consumer gigabit speeds in our near future will facilitate even greater innovations among students, entrepreneurs and many industries powering the Los Angeles economy," says Dinni Jain, chief operating officer at TWC. "Cable was the first to bring broadband Internet to the masses nearly 20 years ago, and thanks to the dynamic nature of our fiber-rich network, we foresee endless new possibilities as we roll-out gigabit speeds to all of Los Angeles."

The competition in the broadband service industry is increasing very fast and TWC is not the only provider to offer speeds that reach up to 1Gbps. Google initially introduced its broadband service, Google Fibre, in Kansas City, Kansas. Google has confirmed its plans to roll out the fast broadband services to other areas as well.

Similarly, AT&T has also introduced its GigaPower broadband service, which can reach speeds of up to 1Gbps, in Austin, Texas. The company has also announced its plans to expand in other regions including Los Angeles.

TWC currently offer 100Mbps as the fastest broadband speed, which is expected to reach 300Mbps by the end of this year. A faster Internet connection of 1Gbps means that users can download, upload and stream data in the blink of an eye. People in Los Angeles will hope that TWC is able to get 1Gbps broadband speed in the city at the earliest.
