Christopher Nolan's 'Memento' Is So Perfect It's Getting A Remake

It's not a false memory and, no, your memory did not just go backwards because Christopher Nolan's 2000 masterpiece "Memento" is really going to have a remake. AMBI Pictures, the Italian production company that bought Exclusive Media Group's Film Library in September announced on Nov. 16 that it will be remaking Nolan's breakout film.

Why is AMBI Pictures interested in remaking the film when it has only been 15 years since it was first released? Putting aside the fact that AMBI launched its $200 million film fund, its heads Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi believe "Memento's" critical and public acclaim make it the perfect film to be remade.

"'Memento' has been consistently ranked as one of the best films of its decade...This is a quality that we feel really supports and justifies a remake," Iervolino said. Bacardi, however, expressed the desire to bring back a puzzle that the audience would enjoy piecing together. "Memento' is a masterpiece that leaves audiences guessing... we are extremely excited and motivated to bring this puzzle back to life and back into the minds of moviegoers," Bacardi said.

The Academy Award-nominated film released in 2000 was based on the short story titled "Memento Mori" written by Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan's brother. The movie follows a man in search for his wife's rapist and murderer even as he suffers through his anterograde amnesia, which causes him to lose his short term memory. In order to remember important details, he creates a system to remind himself of important things through Polaroid photos, notes and tattoos all over his body.

The original film starred Guy Pearce as Leonard and was presented through a series of interspersed black and white and full-color film sequences which represent a chronological order of events and a reverse-chronology, respectively.

"We intend to stay true to Christopher Nolan's vision," Bacardi assures. Are we all assured by her words? We'll just have to wait and see how the company will go about remaking a masterpiece without ruining it.
