Strapless bras are very useful in creating a smooth, shapely figure for the people who wear them. Because of their design, however, these pieces of underwear can often be cumbersome to wear.
One company is aiming to offer a new strapless bra inspired by the sticky feet of geckos so that the underwear stays in place.
Mechanical engineer Anthony Roy came up with the design and founded the company Kellie K Apparel after his wife, Kellie, couldn't find a strapless bra that remained in place and provided ample support.
Roy decided to tackle the issue, building a prototype using an early iteration of GeckTech, an adhesive inspired by the feet of a gecko.
Of course, it's important to mention that women won't be wearing a bra that is made with gecko feet. Instead, it is made with an adhesive that functions similarly to how a gecko's feet work. While a gecko isn't actually sticky, it is able to stick to most surfaces because of the fact that it has millions of tiny hairs on its feet.
Roy was able to recreate those same properties by using a silicone-based material that could come in contact even with sensitive skin without the worry of any irritation. Not only that, but the bra fits well and offers comfort.
Scientists have been studying gecko feet more and more of late. Even researchers at NASA are applying the concept to build a material that has synthetic hair that is lighter and thinner than human hair. The material was used in grappling both a 20-pound cube and a 250-pound person, with researchers suggesting that the material could be used for holding things on the walls of the International Space Station.
The bra comes in two variants: The Alice and The Ava. These models come in three hues, including black, white and beige.
A Kickstarter campaign has been started for the new bras, having gone beyond the $26,250 goal already. Those interested in buying a bra for themselves can head to the Kickstarter page, with $85 getting one Kellie K Apparel bra. Pledges range from $10 to $1,000.
