U.S. will take 10 years to trust us: Huawei

According to China-based Huawei, it may take the U.S. 10 years to trust the company and resolve the cyber security concerns.

Huawei is held at a "higher bar" than rivals by the U.S. and, therefore, it could take the latter close a decade to be convinced that the former is not a potential security risk.

Huawei Technologies Co., China's largest phone-network equipment maker, said it may take a decade to resolve the cybersecurity concerns that restrict its access to the U.S. because the company is held to a "higher bar."

"At Huawei, when we consider security, we do not just consider addressing yesterday's problems, or even the problems we experience today, rather, we focus equally on laying down the foundations for securing tomorrow's world, a world that is dramatically different to what it is today," says John Suffolk, Global Cyber Security Officer of Huawei. "It is with an eye to the future that we recognise and embrace the need for international industry standards for cyber security."

The company also released a new white paper, the second one from Huawei, which gives an in-depth look into the company's approach to address concerns.

"Huawei's latest white paper provides much more detail into its end-to-end cyber security approach, including a more practical overview of the approach Huawei takes to the design, build and deployment of technology that involves cyber security considerations, including overarching strategy and governance structure, its day-to-day processes and standards, staff management, R&D, security verification, third-party supplier management, manufacturing, delivery and traceability," the company said in a statement.

Huawei is persevering to get access to the U.S. and Australian markets. In March 2012, Australia debarred Huawei from bidding on a broadband network owing to "national interests." Huawei was banned by the U.S. in 2011 from partaking in building a emergency network.

"America has genuine concerns, and it's Huawei's responsibility to satisfy those genuine concerns," said Suffolk in a phone interview with Businessweek. "We will continue to work with our American colleagues to satisfy their needs and concerns and we believe we can do that."

Huawei also intends to publish a list of the top 100 issues raised by its customers that pertain to security.
